NZi3 is the national ICT Innovation Institute based at the University of Canterbury. The Institute is a ‘hothouse’ of strategic ICT research and aims to be a globally-recognised innovation centre that transforms ideas from the lab, across the innovation gap, into industry.

As an entrepreneurially-focused, applied research institute, NZi3 offers a unique fusion of the best of New Zealand’s ICT academic expertise with industry-driven research.

New Wireless Research Centre Director
We would like to welcome Fred Samandari who commenced his position as Director of the Wireless Research Centre in January 2010.
Fred was previously Director of Flows and Methodology at Freescale Corporation in Austin, Texas and prior to that was the Senior Design Centre Manager at Oki Semiconductor/ChipX Corporation.
Fred holds BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California and has also completed several project management programmes including an executive MBA essentials.

AUPEC 2010 - 20th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference
The 20th Australasian Universities Power Engineering Conference: Power Quality for the 21st Century will be held in Christchurch NZ from 5-8th December 2010. The theme for the conference is Power Quality for the 21st Century and the scope of the conference will be broad, providing a forum for university and industry power engineering researchers to exchange knowledge and ideas.

- Designers Institute of NZ Best Awards: Gold award for interior design
- New Zealand Institute of Architects: Canterbury Architecture award
- New Zealand Institute of Architects / Resene: colour award
- Illumination Engineering Society (IES) Australia and New Zealand: EECA low energy lighting award
- Illumination Engineering Society (IES) Australia and New Zealand: 'National Lighting Design award
The building is also currently being judged for other awards (results pending) and was also shortlisted for the World architecture awards which were judged at the end of 2009 in Barcelona.
NZi3's founding partners are Hewlett-Packard New Zealand, IBM, Jade Software Corporation, Tait Electronics and the University of Canterbury.
NZi3 Research Award
These scholarships were established in 2007 on behalf of sponsors of the ICT Innovation Institute (NZi3) at the University of Canterbury for the purpose of encouraging research in the field of ICT, either in conjunction with a company or with the intention of developing and commercialising a product. (For the purposes of this award ICT refers to technologies which embody hardware or software in a product, rather than their use in a service industry)
"Bright Ideas" innovation fund
Bright Ideas is a fund whose purpose is to help develop an innovative culture which encourages technology based ideas to escape from the University into the world at large. It is part of a collaborative project involving Canterbury, Otago and Lincoln Universities funded by the Tertiary Education Commission under the Encouraging and Supporting Innovation (E&SI) scheme.
