NZi3 is the national ICT Innovation Institute based at the University of Canterbury. The Institute is a ‘hothouse’ of strategic ICT research and aims to be a globally-recognised innovation centre that transforms ideas from the lab, across the innovation gap, into industry.
As an entrepreneurially-focused, applied research institute, NZi3 offers a unique fusion of the best of New Zealand’s ICT academic expertise with industry-driven research.

Hon. John Key opens the new NZi3 building
The new NZi3 National ICT Innovation Institute building at the University of Canterbury has been officially opened, and recognised as the most environmentally-friendly educational building in the country.

Prime Minister the Hon. John Key was the official guest at the NZi3 building's official opening on 23rd April 2009. He was joined by three other Cabinet members, senior representatives of the Institute's founding partners Hewlett-Packard New Zealand, IBM, Jade Software Corporation, Tait Electronics and the University of Canterbury together with other stakeholders.
Mr Key said Christchurch's reputation as a hub of innovation in New Zealand would be cemented by the establishment of NZi3.
He said economies benefitted from partnerships between universities and industry.
IBM Visiting Scholars
The IBM Visiting Scholars Programme was established in 2008 for the purpose of encouraging collaborative research in the field of Nanotechnology between the University of Canterbury, The MacDiarmid Institute and the IBM Almaden Research Center. The programme provides students with the opportunity to work at IBM Almaden on a variety of projects relating to Nanotechnology.
One placement is open only to PhD students who are working directly with The MacDiarmid Institute (www.macdiarmid.ac.nz). These students may be enrolled in a PhD programme at any institute in New Zealand.
The other placement is open to students enrolled in a PhD programme in the College of Science and the College of Engineering at the University of Canterbury.
Value: $20,000
Tenure: 10-12 weeks

In this action packed seminar, Dr Claudio Gheller will introduce & describe solutions adopted in a collaboration
between CINECA and the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), in order to develop a new generation of graphic software tools. These tools are designed to overcome the limits and the barriers of traditional software by exploiting the latest technological opportunities.
This seminar will also be available remotely via the KAREN videoconferencing bridge.

2009 IEEE International Conference on Control and Automation
The 7th IEEE International Conference on Control and Automation (ICCA’09) will be held on December 9 - 11, 2009, at the University of Canterbury. The conference is jointly organized by the IEEE Control Systems Chapter, Singapore and IEEE South New Zealand Section, and technically sponsored by IEEE Control Systems Society and University of Canterbury. University of Canterbury appoints new Vice-Chancellor
The University of Canterbury has appointed Dr Rod Carr as its next Vice-Chancellor. He will take up a five-year appointment in February 2009.
New NZi3 Business Development Manager
NZi3 are pleased to welcome Hamish House who recently joined the team as NZi3 Business Development Manager. Hamish brings with him four years of experience with the Canterbury Development Corporation where as Project Manager for ICT, he worked closely with both industry, academia and research to develop an extensive network of trusted and well established working relationships in the ICT sector. A key part of his previous role was to identify, develop, fund and manage key economic development projects that in turn created substantial economic value and returns for Canterbury.
NZi3 Research Award
These scholarships were established in 2007 on behalf of sponsors of the ICT Innovation Institute (NZi3) at the University of Canterbury for the purpose of encouraging research in the field of ICT, either in conjunction with a company or with the intention of developing and commercialising a product. (For the purposes of this award ICT refers to technologies which embody hardware or software in a product, rather than their use in a service industry)
"Bright Ideas" innovation fund
Bright Ideas is a fund whose purpose is to help develop an innovative culture which encourages technology based ideas to escape from the University into the world at large. It is part of a collaborative project involving Canterbury, Otago and Lincoln Universities funded by the Tertiary Education Commission under the Encouraging and Supporting Innovation (E&SI) scheme.
